Sen. Lewis has filed the following bills to address animal welfare issues:
- An Act to ensure continued humane animal care and protect family farms in Massachusetts: This bill prohibits the extreme confinement of farm animals- specifically veal calves and pregnant sows- in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. It would level the playing field for humane, sustainable farming practices in the Commonwealth.
- An Act relative to ivory and rhino horn trafficking: This bill would eliminate ivory and rhino horn trade in the Commonwealth. Such trade would only be permitted for educational and non-scientific purposes (i.e. museums). This legislation is needed because elephants and rhinos are endangered as a result of poaching.
